Plan for Activities

By now you may be thinking, “I have gone through all the complicated conceptual and organizational tasks. I have specified a mission for my museum. I have located collections and facilities. I have arranged for security. I have set up an organization, ready to go, with all the legal bases covered. All the rules, roles, and responsibilities are clear. I have done all that. Now can I plan the fun things—programs, exhibit openings, receptions, champagne!?”

Not quite yet. Your museum still is not ready to plan festive ribbon-cuttings or grand unveilings. First come provisions for the continuing background functions that are essential for everything a museum presents to its public. Several ongoing activities are what now need to be added to your plan in response to the following questions from our museum-planning checklist:

What will be your collections policy?

What conservation needs must you meet and how?

What provisions will you make for ongoing research?

What interpretive methods will you use to reach your public?
